Student of the month – Meet Fan Reid
My name is Fan (also known as Janet).
I am 46, married with a young son and I started Bikram Yoga eight months ago after a minor knee injury in my ballet class. My father-in-law who used to be a doctor for the Australian Ballet recommended trying Bikram Yoga. I currently practice Bikram yoga five times a week.
Not only do I feel the magic each time after the class but people have started to tell me that I look much younger.
I have been fit for most of my life until I gave birth to my son. If you had met me 2 years ago, you wouldn’t be able to recognize me because I was at least 20 kilos heavier. When I came back from my maternity leave, I tried to lose the baby weight but the weight I lost seemed to come back quickly. I was told that it had something to do with my age. Having the first baby at the age of 36 made it much harder to recover in comparison to younger mums. So, I gave up and let myself go. I work full time in the financial service industry. Work related stress and lack of physical activity just kept piling the extra pounds on. Two years ago, my parents migrated to Australia. At the airport, they didn’t recognize me. This made me determined to make a change.
I started to take ballet class in my spare time I lost more weight, but I knew my real challenge was to maintain it. At my age, I couldn’t afford a yo-yo style weight loss. Sustainable weight loss takes self-discipline and a healthy life style.
One day, I accidentally twisted my right knee in my ballet class. Thankfully, this little incident lead me to the lifestyle I was searching for in Bikram Yoga.
Bikram yoga helps me to deal with stress and stay strong mentally, physically and sustain the weight loss.
I have made many yogi friends at the Darlinghurst School. Everyone is so nice here. Katie and her team strive to make every class fun and professional. This place is my second home.

Fan can usually be found in one of our classes throughout the week at any time of day.
She is most likely driving the energy at the front row with her discipline and strength.
