Bikram Yoga

26 postures. 2 breathing exercises. 90 minutes that will change your life.

The Practice

What Is Bikram Yoga?

Bikram yoga is a specific sequence of 26 hatha yoga postures and 2 breathing exercises, practised in a room heated to 40°C with 40% humidity. Every class follows the same sequence — same postures, same order, same 90 minutes. This consistency is one of the practice's greatest strengths, allowing you to focus deeper on your own body rather than wondering what comes next.

The sequence was designed to work systematically through every system in your body. Every joint is moved through its full range of motion. Every muscle is stretched and strengthened. Every organ is compressed and massaged. All in 90 minutes.

Practised Worldwide Since the 1970s

The same 26-posture sequence is taught in studios around the world. At Bikram Yoga Darlinghurst, we've been Sydney's home for authentic Bikram yoga instruction since 2002.

Transform Your Body & Mind

The Benefits

A complete workout for body and mind in every class

Flexibility & Mobility

The heated room warms your muscles and connective tissue, allowing deeper, safer stretches. Regular practice increases your baseline flexibility even outside the studio.

Strength & Tone

Holding postures builds functional strength throughout your entire body. Your legs, core, arms and back are all challenged in every single class.

Cardiovascular Health

Practising in 40°C heat elevates your heart rate comparable to moderate aerobic exercise. Your heart becomes more efficient and your circulation improves.

Detoxification & Skin Health

Profuse sweating helps your body eliminate toxins through the skin. Many students notice clearer skin and improved complexion within weeks.

Mental Clarity & Stress Relief

90 minutes of focused practice with no distractions calms your nervous system, sharpens your focus and relieves stress. Students call it moving meditation.

Injury Recovery & Prevention

The therapeutic stretch-compress principle delivers fresh oxygenated blood to every joint, organ and tissue, accelerating recovery and preventing injury.

The Sequence

Why 90 Minutes?

A carefully designed therapeutic sequence that maximises healing

Standing Series

  • 12 postures performed standing
  • Builds strength, balance and cardiovascular fitness
  • Includes balancing, backbends and deep stretches
  • Where you'll sweat the most

Floor Series

  • Remaining postures lying or sitting
  • Deep focus on spine health and flexibility
  • Hip opening and internal organ massage
  • Ends with final breathing exercise

The Power of Two Sets

Each posture is performed twice. The first set warms and prepares your body. The second set is where the real healing happens — deeper stretches, stronger holds, maximum therapeutic benefit.

Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

Not at all. Bikram yoga will help you become more flexible. Many of our most dedicated students started out barely able to touch their knees. The heat allows your muscles to stretch safely, and progress comes with consistent practice.
A yoga mat, a large towel to cover your mat, and at least 750ml of water. Wear minimal, fitted clothing — loose fabric gets heavy with sweat. We have mats and towels available for hire if you're trying it out.
We recommend three to four times per week, especially when you're starting out. Consistency is key — the students who commit to regular practice in the first month are the ones who fall in love with it.
Yes, when practised correctly. The 40°C room is carefully controlled. Stay hydrated, listen to your body, and if you ever feel overwhelmed, simply lie down on your mat. Your body acclimatises to the heat with regular practice.
Bikram yoga follows the same 26-posture sequence every class, practised in a heated room. This consistency allows you to measure progress and go deeper over time. It's a complete workout — cardiovascular, strength and flexibility — all in 90 minutes.
